Workers’ Compensation

Worker’s compensation is a type of injury compensation for employees. This unemployment compensation is an injury insurance governed by compensation laws set forth by each state and is required in the United States for many employers. In North American it is often simply called workers’ comp instead of the full workers’ compensation.

What this injury compensation does is allow for wage replacement and medical coverage for employees who become injured during the course of their employment. In exchange for the worker’s compensation policy, the employee relinquishes the right to sue their employer for negligence. Injury compensation can vary depending on the scope of the injury insurance and the type of injury incurred. It can also vary by workplace, but minimally worker’s compensation will cover a specified length of wage reimbursement and medical care based on the injury and how the compensation laws which govern the unemployment compensation policy read.

This type of unemployment insurance is different than disability insurance, health insurance or life insurance, although in many instances worker’s compensation benefits do fall into these categories and behave similar to those types of insurance coverage depending on the injury or demise of the worker. Worker’s compensation can also in some limited situations pay out a death benefit to the employees beneficiary if the injury results in death rather than recovery. However, this type of unemployment insurance does not pay for pain and suffering of family members or punitive damages due to employer negligence. An insurance broker can look at your individual injury insurance policy and help explain its coverage scope to you.
